Pitch Black |
|||||||||||
Sci
fi movies always have a famed interest, it might be the fantasy, or the
sense of adventure, just the fact that it's something someone has imagined
that you may of aswell. Pitch Black is an enormously strange adaptation
of Sci Fi movies, in one hand you have a brave starting post, which is
as raw and unhelpful to the audience as any Schwarzenegger movie, it begins
with the entertaining crash of a star ship, something which reminds of
the Even Horizon, even so it lands on a planet not of our galaxy, at first
I was hoping it to be Jupiter, that would explain the dust and bright
orange hue, or maybe Venus because they seem to pass through miles of
gas. Granted they land on a planet which seems as habitable as Earth,
they lead an exploration of the crash site.
Revealed to them is a mining quarry, perhaps for the research of the planet, however the crew have long since disappeared more than 20 years ago. The small group easily enter the new environment with a mild manor, we see them lead use curiously around the planet, eventually running into a 22 year event where the planets in the orbit of three suns eclipse and align almost indefinitely. This is why it is called Pitch Black. The story begins when the captain crash lands their motorway long vessel full of hibernating crew and whatnot, while having to jetison some to slow down and control the descent. However in the same cabin as her is a guard and prisoner. The prisoner is the key, he can see in the dark, he had surgery to see in the dark, as a consequence he can't see daylight. As the half-dozen explore this wasteland, they realize a creator beneath the dust, one which is killed by light. The effect of having three suns makes a dramatic impact to the movie, as we see the lighting change for the various colours of the suns, and the surrounding planets. Things really hit off when we see the nearest "Saturn" like planet cross the suns slowly killing the light. However the transport they have runs on solar power, and now they must carry the equipment to get off the planet. While the performances are all neat and tidy, there is not a great deal of plot or story behind it, it is rather an interesting saga. Video Quality You
can say that the movie looks outstanding, the effect of light, which never
washes out is brilliant. There are some stunning scenes, right from the
start we see an explosive action sequence which fills the 2.35:1 anamorphic
transfer brilliantly. The effect such as the ship entering the atmospher
in a fireball look amazing, there are also some great on-planet shots.
Particularly when the three suns are shiny across the landscape. Then
as two disapear there is one left, which is blue and the whole scene turns
a pal white blue, which looks too good to describe. There is brilliant
detail and adequate colours to make for a brilliant looking film.
As they fall to darkness the lighting is still great to give it eerie atmospher. The whole film is brilliant to watch. Audio Quality While
the film may look superior, the sound is still good, if in fact impressive.
The dynamic range of the film is impressive, in the way the vocals are
easily heard and yet the special effects stun and give a real sense of
impact. WHile bass isn't particularily heavy in the film it doesn't stop
it from being a non-stop heart beating wall of excitment. If there is
a downfall it is restricted to Dolby Digital, meaning no DTS.
Extras As
for extras, you get two languages on the sound track, English and German,
in 5.1 Dolby Digital. There are also two extra soundtracks, one containing
two of the cast and director, the otehr commentary from the special effects
masters. There are also some trailers and behind the scenes, but nothing
more.
