My DVD FAQ

X-Men

Based around the old TV series and aged comics, X-Men will sort of bring back memories of the cartoon series to the fans. For me I only saw a couple of the cartoons, and was happy to be able to point the characters out in the film. Although compare X-Men to the cartoon and it becomes clear that the movie is trying much harder to appease the varied audience ages.

We start with the cast, Starring none other than Patrick Stewart yes the one from the 90's Star Trek. He becomes the main character, partnered to Hugh Jackman who will play Wolverine in the movie. Patrick will be playing a crippled "Professor", and the other side-characters will be Storm, Cyclops and Mystique.

From the beginning we see Rogue and Wolverine meeting in a Bar, she hitch hikes with him to be confronted by two of Magnto's allies who wish to capture Rogue and use her to turn all the world into Mutants. You see the world has become run over with mutants, these have he interesting life aspect of being able to do inhuman things, walk through walls, read minds and so on. Most of the normal humans are having doubts to this new race, and wish to consider the effects of mutants on normal life. The mutant race fall into two portions, the ones who wish to defend themselves from the humans and the ones who wish to make them understand that the differences are meagre.

It turns out the former portion aided by Magneto wish to turn the largest world leaders into mutants so that the world will tolerate them. It makes for quite a remarkable story which mixes the features of the cartoon with the reasons "why?". Though many will feel the movie is just a cash in, but it still makes for an entertaining show with plenty of special effects and okay acting. It is quite well produced with a lot of work going into the costume design and look of the movie.

Video Quality

The movies 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen master converted to DVD looks sharp and detailed. The first sequence using a Nazi concentration camp has rather dulled colours, the rest of the movie has a rather fine looking colour range. The costume's really benefit from the brightness of the colour range. The contrast levels are quite good, for most of the movie the images seen quite dark, this is helped no doubt but the detail levels which are impressive.

Considering the amount of extras used on the disc, the compression is very well done, there are no artefacts of any such, noise levels are fair, the output is a little underdone, still it makes for sharp and crisp visualisations.

Audio Quality

The audio quality is pretty good, at first the vocals seem slightly low in volume, this could be to enhance the dynamic range, as most of the action sequences use explosive which need a lot of bass and loudness to get the edge across. However most of the action sequences use very crisp and enhanced sound effects. These sound effects in particular seem finely produced. The gun sequence in particular where the front line of cops are held with their own guns shows the very fine quality the audio section has.

There is no DTS track, though there is two audio languages to chose from, and the Dolby Digital track is pretty fine. Surround action is very good although not enough use of PCM for my tastes. The front speakers aren't used quite enough and the rears don't get enough loudness.

Extras

There are plenty of stills and animatics which make up for plenty of extras. The trailers and biographies and interviews are all well produced. It's nice to see the actors in unedited light, and the screens are plentiful too. All in all there is plenty to do, it even makes up for the short movie time.
